17 girls being taken to Mumbai rescued

The Rajamahendravaram police are making arrangements to send back the 17 girls, whom they ‘rescued’ from Konark Express train when they were on their way to Mumbai from Odisha in search of livelihood.

The Childline helpline received an anonymous call late on Friday that minor girls from Odisha were being taken to Mumbai by the Konark Express train. The Childline representatives brought it to the notice of the railway police. When the train had a halt at Rajamahendravaram in the early hours of Saturday, the railway police spotted the girls in the custody of two women and handed them over to the II-Town police. When the police questioned the girls, they stated that they were majors and got placements in a seafood processing industry in Mumbai.

The police, however, were not convinced with the response, with each girl giving the name of a new employer and mentioning different salaries. The relation between the girls and the two women was not established. After the questioning, the police shifted the girls to the Mahila Pranganam at Bommuru, where Chairperson of Andhra Pradesh Mahila Commission Nannapaneni Rajakumari visited the Pranganam and interacted with the girls.

Highlighting the need for rescuing the girls and ordering an inquiry into the incident, she said that the issue would be brought to the notice of the Odisha government. Meanwhile, the police are making arrangements to send the girls back home.
