  • ACB raids on tainted Andhra official unearths several hundred crore, four shell companies

A day after the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) raided the properties of a tainted official in Andhra, it was revealed that he had allegedly amassed disproportionate assets worth Rs 500 crore, and even opened shell companies.
According to reports, Pamu Panddurunga Rao, who is the engineer-in-chief of the Public Health and Municipal Administration, allegedly opened four shell companies on his wife, Rajyalakshmi’s name.
“Panddurunga Rao, in order to legitimise the ill-gotten money generated from these shell companies, had even paid income tax on it,” the Times of India quoted a senior official saying.
The TOI report adds that raids were conducted at 14 locations across AP and Telangana, with ACB officials unearthing documents of 43 plots and five houses, besides gold and silver jewellery and a bank locker.
The ACB identified the four bogus companies as Sudharma Infotech Ltd, Rajyalakshmi High Tech, HM Technocrat India Pvt Ltd and Lakshmi Hanora Developers.
Stating that Rao owned 2,242 square yards of plots in prime localities Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Keesara, and Krishna district, Hindustan Times quoted an official saying, “He was arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act for possessing assets disproportionate to his income. Investigation is going on into alleged irregularities done by Rao.”
After his arrest, he was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
Last week, the ACB raided various places belonging to Gajuwaka sub-registrar Venkayya Naidu in Andhra, for allegedly amassing assets disproportionate to his known income.
The raids took place in Visakhapatnam, Tirupati and Rajahmundry, and gold, land documents, and a lot of cash was found.

  • Man pushes girlfriend into the Godavari

A man allegedly pushed his girlfriend into the Godavari from the Yanam-Edurlanka bridge, near here, in the early hours of Monday. The woman, however, was rescued by local fishermen and was rushed to the Government hospital here.
According to the I. Polavaram police, Nasika Srinivasa Rao, a native of Surasani Yanam, worked in a readymade cloth showroom in Rajamahendravaram, where he reportedly developed friendship with a 26-year-old woman working with a public sector undertaking.
    Resistance from parents
Though the couple decided to get married, the family members of Srinivasa Rao allegedly opposed the alliance. Subsequently, the woman started pressuring him to marry her at any cost. On Friday evening, the couple left for Amalapuram from Rajamahendravaram, from where Srinivasa Rao reportedly took her to Yanam on a motorcycle on the pretext of marrying her in Draksharamam temple. He stopped the motorcycle for a while on the Yanam-Edurlanka bridge and took her near the railing.
The police claimed that he allegedly pushed the woman into the Godavari, which the fishermen moving in the river on their fishing boats reportedly saw. They rescued her and rushed her to hospital, the police said, adding that they were on the look out for Srinivasa Rao. The condition of the woman is said to be stable. A case has been registered and investigation is on.

  • Hyderabad: 11-year-old girl tortured, put to work by her mother

An 11-year-old girl who had allegedly been tortured and pushed into child labour by her mother and her stepfather approached the S.R. Nagar Police Station seeking strict action against her parents.
The girl, N. Rani, sustained a serious injury below her right eye when her mother hit her with an iron object. The S.R. Nagar Police have booked a case against the girl’s parents and are looking into the matter.
The girl, N. Rani, sustained a serious injury below her right eye when her mother hit her with an iron object.

According to Rani, her mother Pushpa married a man named Anki Reddy, after which they moved from Rajahmundry to Hyderabad. Rani was forced to drop out of school and work alongside her mother. Rani alleged that her mother made her work so that she could earn some extra money.
Rani’s mother bore two children with Reddy. After the birth of the children, Rani faced more harassment than before. “They both scold me and beat me often. They make me work outside, at an Internet centre, and they take away the money I get from there,” Rani said. In a recent incident, Rani was violently assaulted by her mother. “She beat me up with an iron object yesterday, saying I was not doing my job properly. Since there was nobody to help me, I went to the police station for help,” she said.
Despite seeing the child’s condition, the police took over a day to book a case. They said that a thorough inquiry had to be carried out with the mother and the child. Rani was not given any medical assistance. Though her face was swollen and bruised, the police did not take her to a hospital. Md. Waheeduddin, the Inspector of S.R. Nagar Police Station, said, “I tried to hand her over to the Childline officials so that she could get some help. But she refused to go with them. We have booked a case and launched an investigation into the matter.”
Meanwhile, child rights activists alleged that the cops were trying to compromise the case by calling the girl’s parents. Activist Achyuth Rao said, “It is a cognizable offence. How can the cops just compromise the case?”
