Officials of the Legal Metrology Department conducted raids on jewellery showrooms across the State and booked 136 cases against the bullion merchants for allegedly deceiving the customers.
Following complaints of inaccuracy weighing machines, not issuing bills, not mentioning the quality of the yellow metal on bills and other violations on Akshaya Tritiya day on Wednesday, the officials raided the jewel shops, said IG Legal Metrology E. Damodar.
The department constituted 30 teams and raided on PMJ Jewellers, Visakhapatnam; GRP Jewellers, Gajuwaka; Vaibhav Jewellers, Kakinada; Mumbai Jewellers, M.G. Road, Vijayawada; Joyalukkas, Rajahmundry; K.L. Jewellers, Anantapur; New Andhra Jewellers, Nellore; Sri Nidhi Jewellers, Vizianagaram; Sri Sai Lakshmi Jewellers, Anakapalli; Taibha Jewellers, Kadapa; Srinivasa Jewellery, Kurnool; Ramu Jewellers, Bhimavaram, and other shops.
The teams found that the traders were charging equal rate for gold and the stones, weighing machines were not having valid certification from the Legal Metrology officer and the machines were inaccurate, Mr. Damodar said.
Customers have been requested to check whether the weighing machines were correct and insist that the trader issued bills for all transactions. If the customers found any discrepancies, they can complain to 1100, the IG added.
