Man held in Hyderabad for duping people

Hyderabad: A person who duped several persons by posing as the chief executive officer of telecom service provider Airtel and collecting money on the pretext of providing VIP or fancy numbers for mobile phone connections was arrested by the police on Monday. According to the police, Maddela Deepu Babu (28), a native of Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh, was operating from Bengaluru.

Avinash Mohanty, Joint Commissioner of Police, Detective Department said Deepu Babu collected information of high profile persons including public representatives and businessmen and sent them messages promising to provide fancy mobile numbers at a cheaper price.

“When a person shows interest in buying those numbers, Deepu would introduce himself as the CEO of Airtel company and send across his photos and identity card. Later he would collect money from them through online mode before switching off his phone,” said the official. Based on a complaint made by one of the victims from the city, the police arrested him and produced him before court here.
