Justice Lakshmana Reddy sworn in as Andhra’s Lokayukta

Vijayawada: Justice Palleti Lakshmana Reddy was sworn in as the Lokayukta of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. Governor Biswa Bhushan Harichandan administered the oath to Justice Lakshmana Reddy in a programme held at Raj Bhavan in the presence of chief minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy.
Born into an agricultural family on April 18, 1945 at Paidipalem in Kadapa district, Justice Reddy enrolled as an advocate in December 1972 and began practising in Kadapa district court. He was selected as district munsif in 1976 and promoted to assistant sessions judge and later, to district judge at Karimnagar, Tirupati, Kurnool and Rajahmundry.
In May 2005, Justice Lakshmana Reddy was promoted to additional judge in the AP high court and permanent judge in 2006. He was appointed vice-chairman of the Central Administrative Tribunal, Hyderabad bench, in 2007 and worked in that position till 2010. Justice Lakshmana Reddy passed a landmark judgement on pollution caused on the outskirts of Hyderabad by unauthorised release of effluents into water bodies by industries. Based on his report, the Supreme Court invoked the principle of ‘polluter pays’.
