Central GST teams crack the whip

An intensive inspection drive by the anti-evasion teams of the Visakhapatnam Central GST Commissionerate, which has jurisdiction over the revenue districts of East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam, against steel manufacturing, shipping services, infrastructure services, logistics and hotel sectors, yielded tax of around ₹18.09 crore from 15 taxpayers.

In the inspectors conducted in Vizianagaram, Rajamahendravaram and Kakinada, the teams uncovered default payments of GST to the tune of ₹33.54 crore and further detected non-payment of erstwhile Central Excise and Service Tax of around ₹8 crore.

Principal Commissioner of Central Tax, Visakhapatnam Central GST, B. Hareram informed that so far ₹18.09 crore was recovered and action was being taken to recover the remaining tax dues. He urged taxpayers to file their returns and pay taxes without delay to avoid penalties and interest. Taxpayers facing difficulty in filing returns or payment of taxes can contact any one of the 14 GST Seva Kendras operating in the jurisdiction of the Commissionerate.

The Principal Commissioner stated that stringent action would be taken against those taxpayers, who indulge in wilful default in the payment of GST or collect GST from their customers and do not deposit the same to the government. Action would be initiated against taxpayers, who do not maintain their records/accounts, he added.
