Inebriated driver kills a woman

At a time when the police are leaving no stone unturned to crack down on drunk-driving, the city on Sunday woke up to a fatal accident caused by an inebriated driver.

The accident took place on Road No. 10 at Jubilee Hills around 1 a.m. A play-school owner, who was driving his SUV while drunk, allegedly hit a two-wheeler, killing a 35-year-old woman and injuring two others.

According to the police, the deceased was identified as Masthani, a resident of Srinagar colony, who hailed from Tadepalligudem of West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. The injured women, Anusha Reddy alias Priya Reddy (34), also from Tadepalligudem, and Anusha (20), a native of Rajahmundry, were battling for life at a private hospital.

“Masthani died while undergoing treatment at 3.20 a.m. on Sunday, while others are gregariously injured,” the police said.

Police said the SUV driver, P. Vishnuvardhan (37), had attended a party in Kondapur and was on his way to Somajiguda when he hit the women’s bike from behind. The victims were returning home to Srinagar colony from Kukatpally.

“The impact of the collision threw Masthani about eight feet away, resulting in a fatal head injury,” a police official said. Jubilee Hills inspector K. Purna Chander said Vishuvardhan’s blood alcohol-content was 206 mg.

After knocking down the bike, the panic-stricken driver tried to flee. In the process, he hit a median, damaging his car, the police said. The deceased was shifted to the Osmania General Hospital morgue for autopsy and the body was later handed over to the family.
