Animal Hostels soon in the District

East Godavari district administration is planning to set up hostels exclusively for domestic animals to improve the milk production. In the first phase, two such facilities will be set up at Gandepalli and Rangapuram villages, for which a sum of Rs. 8 lakh will be released for each unit.

Reviewing arrangements for the launch of the project here on Saturday, Collector H. Arun Kumar said that the ‘animal hostel’ concept was very successful in Gujarat, where farmers had registered a substantial increase in milk production. Explaining in detail, he said that facilities like shelter, fodder, water and medical aid would be provided to cattle at the hostels, which would be managed by SHG members. Farmers need to register with the hostels and pay the prescribed amount every month towards the maintenance fee. “Arrangements will be made to ensure market for the milk products produced at the hostels so as to ensure remunerative price to farmers. The Animal Husbandry Department would monitor the hostels on a regular basis. The two hostels would have a capacity of 50 cattle each and priority would be given to milch cattle, Mr. Arun Kumar explained.
