Rajamahendravaram: Fisheries Department is initiating steps to improve fish production in East Godavari district and as part of it arranging brood bank in Kadiyam in the place of existing fish production centre which has not been functioning for several months now.
According to an official of the department, an amount of Rs 70 lakh was allocated for the brood bank and tenders worth Rs 3 crore invited to purchase as many as 2.70 crore fish mainly from Krishna and West Godavari districts.
Mainly male and female fish of Seelavathi, Bocchu, Errameenu and Ragandi will be developed in the brood bank. Later, they will be sold and also released into canals, tanks along with River Godavari, Pampa and Yeleru reservoirs.
At present there is no sufficient fish seed in the district and as a result fishermen societies and some other organisations are purchasing them from outside. Six acres of land will be used for the proposed brood bank and necessary facilities will also be provided. The efforts of Fisheries department will help to increase the fish production in the district.
