Marriage has not affected my film choices: Samantha

Samantha Akkineni has once again proved what a versatile actor she is! Her  role of Rama Lakshmi in the recently released Rangasthalam has garnered praises from all quarters.

“I’ve never played a complete village girl role before this, so it’s new and challenging  for me. But I decided to give my best to Sukumar and live up to his vision of the character.”

The 30-year-old further says that working on the period film was a different  experience.

“I initially started my career with Gautam Menon sir’s films and he didn’t want me to move my eyebrows or move the body too much. But when it comes to director  Sukumar, he is the complete opposite. He says, ‘Sam you should look ugly while acting’ and when I watched the film, even I didn’t know that I could move my face like that.”

The strong-willed Samantha

The actress feels that her career has been laden with many risks and challenges. 

“I like risks and at the same time I love challenges,” she says. adding, “When I signed Eega, Rajamouli wanted to do a small experimental film and asked me to give him 70 days. At the same time, I got two big offers opposite two top actors, but I preferred Eega. Moreover, for the latter, my remuneration was almost nothing, but for those two big projects, I was offered an amount three times more than Eega. But I still chose Eega and took a risk and after the release people saw that I could do performance-oriented roles too.”

Marriage changes nothing! 

It has been seen in the industry that filmmakers are apprehensive about approaching an actress after she gets married. 

Commenting on the subject, the Mahanati actress says, “I personally don’t think that it is a big problem. I have proved that! It’s not right to believe that the audience doesn’t come to the theatres because an actress got married. The filmmakers have the wrong mindset and I think it’s time to move on!” feels Samantha.

She adds,  “Don’t take me if I am not talented, but don’t tell me that I am married that’s why I won’t get a role.”

The actress also states that marriage has not altered her choice of films. “I have to grow and I have to pave my own path as an actress; I don’t want to do meaningless roles that have nothing to do with the story. So, I personally see what I stand to gain from a role and then sign a film. That’s the reason one will see me in fewer commercial films. And marriage has not affected my choice of films — only I have the power to affect my choices,” she clarifies.

Sam’s family frame

The actress says that her family is, in fact, her biggest supporter. “And because of them I am continuing to act after marriage. I am not scared of anything and I can go to work happily with a free mind,” she reveals. However, outside of work, the family rarely talks about films. 

“At home, we don’t discuss films after 6 pm. I never interfere in Chaitanya’s work and vice versa. I don’t even discuss my film’s story or what’s happening on the sets with him,” says Samantha, adding, “When I was shooting for Rangasthalam in Rajahmundry, I called him and said, ‘It’s very hot’ here.’ That’s the only thing I told him.” Interestingly, Samantha also reveals something important that she has learnt from her husband.

“Before my film’s release, I couldn’t sleep and was always panicky. If the film failed, I went into depression. It was here that Chaitanya taught me something. He said he always gave 100 percent to a film and that he couldn’t control the audience’s reaction. Now I follow the same thought process and I am able handle things well,” says Samantha, who has just returned from the US after a two-week holiday.
