800 Nirbhaya cases in the district, but cops differ

Crime against women is on the rise in East Godavari district, if the number of rape cases booked by the authorities is any indication. As many as 821 cases have been booked under the Nirbhaya Act in the district since February 2014.But, police are apparently not serious in their approach, arguing that though most cases have been booked under the Nirbhaya Act, not all of them are technically “rape” cases.

They, according to them, also include eve-teasing and cases of outraging the modesty of women.

Ironically, the district is represented by none other than Home Minister N. China Rajappa. According to the District Crime Records Bureau (DCRB), as many as 537 cases have been booked under IPC 354 (A-D), which now comes under the Nirbhaya Act, in the district.
