Rajamahendravaram: Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation (RMC) has been accorded Greater status by merging 21 villages from Rajamahendravaram rural, Korukonda and Rajanagaram mandals.
According to official sources, the orders upgrading the civic body to Greater Rajahamendravaram Municipal Corporation (GRMC) were issue late on January 10 night.
After the merger, the population under GRMC jurisdiction will increase to 5.79 lakh from the current 3.42 lakh.
The geographical limit of the corporation will also extend to 218.73 square kilometre from the existing 47 sq km.
According to sources, in Rajamahendravaram rural mandal, Katheru, Kolamur, Pidimgoyyi, Hukumpeta, Bommuru, satellite City, Dowleswaram, Rajavolu, Namavaram, Torredu and Venkatanagaram have been merged with the corporation.
In Korukonda mandal, villages of Nidigatla, Gadala Madhurapudi, Burugupudi and Vemagiri and in Rajanagaram mandal, villages Chakradwarabandha and Velugubanda have been made part of Greater RMC.
Because of the merger, the number of corporators will also increase to 75 from the existing 50.
The merger of the villages had been pending for many years and finally the decks were cleared recently.
