Rising floodwater cuts off 21 villages in East Godavari district

RAJAHMUNDRY: Due to heavy rains in its catchment area about 21 villages have been cut off in the East Godavari district. The authorities of the ITDA, Rampa Chodavaram are making arrangements to evacuate 26 villages in Devipatnam mandal, which are prone to inundation.
In the Godavari catchment area, the water level has touched 7.80 metres at Kaleswaram, 12.22 metres at Peruru, 10.20 metres at Dummugudem, 32.50 metres at Bhadrachalam, 12 metres at Koonavaram, 11.53 metres at Kunta, 16.24 metres at Koida, 9.84 metres at Polavaram and 14.44 metres at Rajahmundry old railway bridge.
Talking to the TOI, project officer, ITDA, Chintur, Abhishikth Kishore said, “Four panchayats have been cut off. First warning will be issued on Wednesday at Bhadrachalam after Godavari reaches 43 feet. Evacuations will begin after Godavari reaches 53 feet. Zonal teams for evacuation and relief have been pressed into service. Four schools in the flooded areas have been closed.”
