Bike rally without helmets upsets Suriya

A motorcycle rally taken out to welcome Tamil actor Suriya in the city by his young fans left the hero unimpressed.

“Not even a single biker had his helmet on,” said the actor, who was apparently displeased.

Pointing to the fact that people in Tamil Nadu also celebrate Sankranti festival, he said he was away from home on this important occasion but “I see this (pointing to the crowd) as my family, and so I take the liberty to say this; Today when I was coming, there was a bike rally taken out by my younger brothers here. But they were riding without a helmet: not even one of them had the headgear in place. One of the bikes almost skid and came under my car. If something had happened, it’ll be a lifelong scar for me,” he said, making an appeal with folded hands to the young biking enthusiasts not to neglect safety norms. The actor was in city to promote his just-released film Gang along with other crew members.

Narrating how dangerous and scary it was for him to see youngsters riding without helmets, he said: “I urge you to give me your love, not life.” Pointing to the ‘wonderful’ roads, he said a lot of people resorted to rash driving. “Life is very precious and you have so much to achieve,” he said.

The Tamil hero has a huge fan base not just in Tamil Nadu but also in all other southern states where his dubbed films find appreciation.

He said it was his maiden visit to Vijayawada about which he had heard “a lot of nice things”.

“It’s been 12 years since I started my career in Telugu films and it has been a wonderful journey,” he said, adding that for the first time, he was travelling all the small towns of Andhra Pradesh.

“Gang is my 35th film and it is very important in my career. The film is being accepted well not just in Tamil Nadu but also in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala. After a gap of eight years, we have a festive release, and I am here to thank people for their support,” he said.

The actor has been going around cinemas in Rajahmundry, Guntur, Nellore and Ongole to meet and interact with his fans for the first time.
