YSRC leader arrested for alleged rape

VIJAYAWADA:  Former municipal chairman of Jaggaiahpet town and YSRC leader Tanniru Nageswara Rao was arrested by Patamata police on Saturday on charges of allegedly raping a 40-year-old woman, also believed to be his friend. He was given judicial remand and sent to Rajahmundry jail. According to Patamata circle inspector K Damodhar, the victim approached police commissioner Gautam Sawang on November 1 and lodged a cheating case with Patamata police on the same day.

In the complaint, the woman claimed that Nageswara Rao extorted around ` 40 lakh in the pretext of offering a political position in the party. She also alleged that Rao sexually exploited her several times in the last few months. Police tried to reach Rao who was absconding from Jaggaiahpet town. “We finally traced him on Friday and presented him before the Vijayawada magistrate court. The court gave judicial remand and sent him to Rajahmundry jail,” said K Damodhar.

The circle inspector further said that the victim approached senior party leaders like Samineni Uday Bhanu, Nagiri MLA Roja and even Jagan Mohan Reddy. “All her pleas fetched no results. With no option left, she approached police,” he said.A case has been registered under section 420 (cheating), 376(2) (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC.
