Woman held for ‘fraud’

A woman who deceived several people by luring them with loan and festival offers was arrested by the Patamata police on Saturday.

The accused, B. Madhavi alias Varikuppala Nagarani alias Anjali, cheated many people in Rajamahendravaram, Khammam, Vijayawada and Hyderabad. A case was registered against her in the Cyber Police Station, Hyderabad, on similar charges, said Patamata in-charge circle inspector K. Damodar.

The modus operandi of the accused, a native of Chinna Cherlapalli in Hyderabad, was to collect the phone numbers of customers at electronic and other showrooms and malls and later call them up claiming herself as an employee of a private finance company with an offer to sell goods at a cheaper price. Using their details, she would approach a finance company for a loan to buy expensive articles like LED TVs. Later, she would trick the customers into revealing their One Time Password (OTP) using which she would go ahead with the purchase and take delivery of the product, leaving the loan burden on the customer. Following a complaint, she was arrested at a showroom here on Saturday, the CI said.
