Rs 20 cr for development of jails: Dy CM

RAJAHMUNDRY: Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Nimmakayala Chinarajappa has said that the government has granted Rs 20 crore for the development of jails.He was invited as the chief guest in the Prisoners’ Welfare Day celebrations at the Rajahmundry Central Jail on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that on Monday the nation was celebrating the birth anniversaries of two great leaders Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.The Home Minister explained that Gandhi’s birth anniversary was being celebrated as prisoners’ day to bring a change among the prisoners.He said that parole has been extended up to 45 days for the prisoners. Chinarajappa said that the government had improved the amenities in jails and providing good food to prisoners.

“We are training the prisoners in computer science, sewing, making notebooks and imparting skill development programmes,” the Minister said.Chinarajappa said that they had started meditation and yoga classes in the prisons for mental peace and good health of prisoners.

“Soon, we will construct a hospital on the jail premises for the benefit of prisoners,” he added.

“Under the petrol bunk scheme, prisoners earned a profit of Rs 1.45 crore. The government is taking all measures to prevent the cultivation of ganja and smuggling of red sanders logs,” he said.

He distributed certificates to the candidates who successfully completed skill development training programme.
