1620 kg ganja worth R2 cr seized from lorry, 5 held

VISAKHAPATNAM: In a major haul, the Visakhapatnam Rural Police seized 1,620 kg of ganja worth around `2 crore and arrested five smugglers when the gang was trying to shift the contraband by a lorry near Ayyanna Colony at Narsipatnam on Monday night.

The accused have been identified as Pujari Babu Rao (32), former sarpanch of Gumma Revulu in GK Veedhi mandal, Konathala Sathibabu (25) of Yerrakonda in East Godavari district, Vanthala Bondhu (25), Darakonda area, Subhum Praveen Patil, a native of Nagpur in Maharashtra and Kuppisetti Munemma, a native of Warangal.

However, three more accused-Akthar from Rajahmundry, Pujari Jagatroy from Darakonda and Durga Rao of Mandapeta in East Godavari district- managed to flee. “The gang had stuffed the ganja in gunny bags and covered the load with husk in the lorry to evade police,” said Narsipatnam inspector (Town) Simhadri Naidu.Acting on a tip-off, the police intercepted the vehicle and seized the contraband.
