Madhurapudi airport works to be completed by the year-end

Works on the Madhurapudi airport, including expansion of runway from 1,418 metres to 3,165 meters, construction of new aprons, and aerobridge, will be completed by this year-end, Rajamahendravaram MP M. Murali Mohan has said.

Addressing the media after chairing the Airport Development Committee meeting here on Friday, Mr. Murali Mohan said he had written to the Union Home Ministry to change the name of the airport and railway station to Rajamahendravaram.

There was a need to name the airport after a great leader, he said, and added that he had discussed the issue with the Chief Minister.

Mr. Murali Mohan said that compensation to the farmers who had parted with their lands for the expansion of the airport had already been paid.

The issue of paying compensation to the palm oil trees on the lands would be sorted out by the Sub-Collector soon, Mr. Murali Mohan added.

Replying to a question, the MP said that repairs to the rail-cum-road bridge would be taken up soon.

Earlier, giving a PowerPoint presentation, airport director M. Rajkishore told the development committee members that expansion works had been taken up with Rs. 162 crore.
