Delta farmers demand one more barrage below Dowleswaram

ELURU: Former MP and Andhra Pradesh Rythu Karyacharana Samithi chairman Yarra Narayana Swamy has demanded the government to construct another barrage across river Godavari below the Dowleswaram Barrage.

Addressing a meeting on the protection of Godavari delta at SRKR Engineering College in Bhimavaram on Friday, Narayana Swamy said, the tail-end lands did not get water during Godavari flood season. Indeed, the Godavari delta in the state won’t get water if the lift irrigation schemes in Telangana are completed, he averred and asked the government to revive the drainage board for both Godavari and Krishna deltas immediately.
SRKR Engineering College WET Centre coordinator PA Ramakrishnam Raju demanded the government to set up expert committee for the protection of delta areas. As river Godavari witnesses floods from July to October, the lift irrigation schemes should be stopped from November every year.
If the Godavari water does not flow into the sea from the river mouth, the sea water enters the river area and turns the delta into a desert. Hence, a regulator should be constructed across Upputeru to arrest the entry of salt water from the sea into delta water sources, he explained.
Bhimavaram MLA P Ramanjaneyulu, Nidadavole MLA B Sesharao, Council whip Angara Ramamohan, Narasapuram MLA B Madhava Naidu, Western Delta Project Committee chairman Raaraju, farmers’ leader A Bhavani Prasad, Project Committee former chairman P Murali Ramaraju, Rythu Karyacharana Samithi honourary president MV Suryanarayana Raju and SRKR Engineering College director SV Rangaraju also spoke.
