As many as 130 woodcutters, mostly from neighbouring Tamil Nadu, were arrested in Nellore and Kada pa districts of Andhra Pradesh on Sunday . Some of those held are suspected to be red sanders coolies who had escaped during the encounter in the Seshachalam hill ranges of Chittoor last week.
The Nellore police arrested 80 people while the Kadapa cops rounded up 52 from the Rajampet area. Nellore district police superintendent, Gajarao Bhupal, said stern action will be taken against those involved in red sanders smuggling. “We will take action in such a manner that the very mention of red sanders will instill fear in the smugglers,“ he said.
The persons arrested in Nellore district belong to the same area where the 20 woodcutters killed in the April 7 encounter hailed from, said police. Forty logs of red sanders wood worth Rs two crore besides four vehicles were seized from their possession in Nellore, Bhupal said.
