AAI Team Visits Bhogapuram

VIZIANAGARAM: Close on the heels of the state government’s announcement to establish a greenfield airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district, a team of officials from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) toured the mandal to study the feasibility of setting up an international greenfield airport here Monday. The team led by AAI chairman RK Srivastava examined the availability of land in the neighbouring villages of Basavapalem, Gudem and Dibbalapalem along with Visakhapatnam airport director Pattabhi, Vizianagaram joint collector B Ramarao and other officers.

The delegation examined various aspects such as the extent of land available, the wind direction, distance from the sea, climatic conditions and other aspects which are the key factors considered in identifying the location of an airport.

“An expert delegation is expected to visit the site and conduct a detailed feasibility study before coming up with the final report which would be submitted to the government,” said Srivastava.

The proposal for setting up a greenfield airport at Bhogapuram, about 60 km from Visakhapatnam, was mooted during the Congress regime, two years ago. The state government took up the project by including it in the state budget for 2015-16, which was presented last week.

Though places like Atchuthapuram, S Rayavaram and Bheemili in Visakhapatnam were considered, the state government is said to have opted for Bhogapuram. The state government is said to be keen on setting up the new greenfield airport at Bhogapuram where the government owns over 2,000 acres of land. Besides, the government has proposed setting up an aero city near the airport.
