Malvika, Ritika seeded second in All India Senior Ranking Badminton tournament

NAGPUR: Malvika Bansod and Ritika Thaker have been seeded second in the Yonex-Sunrise All India Senior Ranking Badminton tournament which will get underway at Bangalore on Tuesday.

Back-to-back tournaments at Bengaluru (January 7 to 12) and Goa (January 14 to 19) are the selection trials for the Indian team, which will compete in the Asian Badminton Championship slated to be held Singapore from February 11 to 16.

Malvika will be the second seed in the women’s singles. Her arch-rival Aakarshi Kashyap of Chhattisagrh will be the top seed. Both Malvika and Aakarshi represent Airport Authority of India (AAI) on the domestic circuit.

Eighteen-year-old Malvika recently jumped to the second spot in the BAI rankings with 2347 points to her kitty. The in-form southpaw would definitely like to extend her dream run and break into the senior Indian team with yet another fine show in the twin tournaments.

Former India No. 2 Vaishnavi Bhale will be the eleventh seed in the women’s singles. A below average performance last year affected her rankings quite a bit.

Ritika Thaker and Simran Singhi, who have now jumped to the third spot in the women’s doubles with 962 points to their credit, have been given the second billing in their favourite event.
The Nagpur-Thane duo has recently rounded up the 2019 with a maiden U-19 girls doubles title at the Junior National Championship at Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh.
Brimming with confidence after their big title few days ago, the teenage Maharashtra pair would certaily like to continue their brilliant run with an eye on the national berth.
Reigning national women’s doubles champions Shikha Gautam and K Ashwini Bhat will be the top seed.
