YSRCP misusing police to book false cases against TDP workers in AP: Chandrababu

Hyderabad: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu lashed out against the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in Andhra Pradesh, alleging that the latter is misusing the police and registering false cases against TDP workers who have been vocal on social media against the state government. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Naidu also brought along with him a handful of party leaders and workers who were arrested under various cases in the recent past.

“They are indulging in character assassination as well. And the police is not doing anything at all and instead filing cases against TDP workers over social media posts. My workers also have rights. The TDP is a national party, which has worked for the people. We will review all these cases and fix things,” Naidu said in a stern warning to YSRCP president and AP chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Pointing to a derogatory social media post about him in a presentation, Naidu said that he has not seen such things happening in his political life until now. “I have never seen such a lowly government in my life. Our workers have been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and arrested over social media posts. Is this how the police should behave?” questioned the TDP supremo.

Ever since the YSRCP came to power in may this year, TDP leaders and Naidu have been claiming that party workers were being attacked by the YSRCP as well. Koteswara Rao, a TDP worker present with Naidu, alleged that he was arrested for posting on social media against the YSRCP, and that also that the police official who took him into custody also showed the incident to a YSRCP MLA. “I was arrested because I had posted against the YSRCP on social media before 2019 elections,” he added.

“One worker was taken to Rajahmundry jail in August and booked under sections 307, 311 and 506 of the IPC for criticizing the AP government. The chief minister cannot do as he pleases. Everyone should be treated impartially (by the police),” Naidu stated.

In the 2019 state and Lok Sabha elections in AP, the YSRCP won a staggering 151 of the 175 assembly seats and 22 of the 25 parliamentary constituencies, giving the TDP one of its biggest losses in its history. The TDP currently has 23 MLAs and three members of parliament in AP.
