Godavari witnesses floods 34 times between 1953 and 2019

Rajamahendravaram: The mighty river Godavari has received floods 34 times between 1953 and 2019 and of them the floods were recorded 22 times during the month of August and thousands of tmcft of water was released into the sea from Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage (SACB).

According to an official of the Water Resources Department (WRD) at Godavari Head Works (GHW), in the year 1953 on August 19, 30,03,100 cusecs of water was released into the sea from SACB.

On August 16,1986, 35,06,388 cusecs of water, on August 25, 1990, 27,88,700 cusecs of water, on August 7, 2006, 28,50,664 cusecs of water, on August 9, 2010, 20,05,299 cusecs, on August 4, 2013, 21,18,170 cusecs and on August 10, 2019, 15.61 lakh cusecs of water was released into the sea. Thus the Godavari river water released into the sea this year is the seventh highest during the last 66 years.

The floods which occurred in 1953 and 1986 were described as Pedda Varadalu. The employees of the WRD are always on the alert during Godavari floods every year and discharging their duties efficiently following an action plan.

In 1953, 30,03,100 cusecs of Godavari water was released into the sea from Arthur Cotton Barrage.

In 1986, 35,06,388 cusecs of water was released into the sea.

Thus the Godavari floods which were witnessed in 1953 and 86 are described as ‘Pedda Varadalu’.

The floods recorded this year are the seventh highest during the last 66 years, with 15.61 lakh cusecs of water released into the sea on August 10
