87.48% polling recorded in Anaparthy Assembly segment

Anaparthy Assembly segment registered the highest voter turnout of 87.48% while the Rajahmundry Urban registered the lowest turnout of 66.34% in the general elections held on Thursday.

In all, 80% of the 42.04 lakh voters from the district consisting of 19 Assembly segments and three Lok Sabha constituencies exercised their franchise.

The polling that began at 7 a.m. continued till the midnight with hundreds of people waiting for their turn outside the polling stations in long queues by the scheduled closure of 6 p.m.

Following guidelines from the Election Commission, the polling officials allowed those who reached the polling station by 6 p.m. to exercise their vote.

Glitches in the EVMs and the VVPATs were said to be the main reason for the inordinate delay in the polling, whereas the women and senior citizens preferred to cast their vote in the evening hours to escape from the scorching sun.

In the presence of the election observers, the election officials stored the EVMs and the VVPATs in the strongrooms and sealed them as per the guidelines issued by the ECI. Personnel from the CPRF were deployed on security duty at the strongrooms.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Collector Kartikeya Misra thanked all those who take part in the election duties and ensured free and fair polling.
