Spontaneous response helped them emerge winners, grab trophies

The hushed whispers and muted discussions in the hall came to a halt as the preliminary round of the Inter School Quiz – 2018 began at Kalabharathi Auditorium on Monday.

Hosted by The Hindu In School, in collaboration with the National Insurance Company Limited, about 124 teams (Classes VIII to XII) from 27 schools signed up for the prelims, wherein each team was given a set of 25 questions. Of which, the top six teams made the finals.

From sports to science, civics to geography, general knowledge to current affairs and cinema, the questions touched several subjects, and the contestants were quick enough to switch from one topic to the other as The Hindu’s residential quiz master V.V. Ramanan put the contestants’ grey cells to test in an effortless way.

The first round in the final began with guessing the newspaper headlines based on the dateline screened. The Chosen One, Discover, Rainbow, ‘Mera Bharat Mahan’ and ‘Question the Answer’ were the rest of the rounds that formed part of the finale.

Y. Navya and V. Laasya of TRIPS International School, Rajamahendravaram, stood first in the contest.

“Right from the beginning, we were confident that we would hit it off well as a team. Thanks to our years of preparation, otherwise it would have been a difficult task to answer such tough questions covering diverse subjects,” the duo said, laying emphasis on reading The Hindu everyday to keep abreast of authentic and balanced news.

The winners were visibly delighted to qualify for the national-level competition. Chief Regional Manager of National Insurance Company Limited B.S.R. Gupta gave away trophies and certificates to the winners, runners-up and finalists. Mr. Gupta appreciated The Hindu for organising such event that aimed at developing the competitive spirit of the students.

Certificates were given to all participants. Some of the smart ones in the audience too won goodies for getting the right answers.

Apart from Visakhapatnam, a few teams also arrived from Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Tuni and Peddapuram.

The inter school quiz will be held in 11 cities across the country and the winners at the city-level will qualify for the national-level contest to be held in Kolkata this month-end.
