RAJAHMUNDRY: A woman and six girls were feared dead after a boat carrying 32 passengers capsized in the Godavari on Saturday evening in Andhra Pradesh. The tragedy happened when the country-made boat wobbled in turbulent waters and rammed into a pillar of an under-construction bridge in Vruddha Goutami branch of Godavari at Pasuvullanka village in East Godavari district. While 26 passengers were rescued, six people were missing. Most passengers were schoolchildren below 15 years of age and two of the rescued were hospitalized.
East Godavari collector Karthikeya Mishra told TOI the river was in spate due to heavy rain and the boat, which was travelling downstream, veered out of control and hit a pillar and overturned. Even as passengers were tossed into the waters, the boat was towed to the other bank. “Luckily, fishermen at the spot managed to rescue 26 of them. The passengers, mostly students, were from Seri Lanka, K Gangavaram and Pamarru villages,” he said.
