106 prisoners to get degrees at Braou convocation

HYDERABAD: As many as 34,876 candidates, including 106 prisoners, will receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates at the 22nd convocation of the BR Ambedkar Open University (Braou) on Friday.
Briefing the media about the convocation, Braou VC K Seetharama Rao said that the most interesting thing about this year’s convocation is that 106 student prisoners, both men and women, will be receiving degrees.
“These prisoners are from central prisons at Cherlapalli, Rajahmundry, Warangal and Kadapa. One prisoner, Tummala Venkateswara Rao, from Rajahmundry central prison will also receive the ‘Smt Ananthasagar Bharathi Vishweswara Reddy Memorial Book Prize’ at the convocation,” he said.
The open university will also award 36 gold medals (UG-13 and PG-23) and four book prizes (UG-03 and PG-01). He added that from 2018-19, the varsity will once again offer PhD courses after they were discontinued in 2009. The varsity will also offer PhD in science subjects from the coming year for the first time.
