Officials conducting the Janmabhoomi – Maa Ooru gram sabhas were taken aback when two youths attempted suicide in separate incidents at Mydukur in Kadapa district and at Rajamahendravaram in East Godavari district on Thursday. Police intervened and foiled the attempts.
Shaik Mastan Vali, a resident of Mydukur, was allotted a house site in 2008. Alleging that his house site was encroached upon by another person, he made several representations to the revenue and police officials, but in vain. Anguished at the apathy of officials in resolving his problem, he attempted suicide by dousing himself in kerosene at the gram sabha, but police saved him.
At a Janmabhoomi progamme being addressed by Rural MLA Butchaiah Chowdary, Medisetty Satish (38) of Hukumpeta near Rajamahendravaram suddenly stood up and shouted slogans and later poured petrol on himself. The police who were nearby rushed towards him and stopped him from lighting the clothes. Police said, the youth, a TDP worker, was frustrated after failing to get a loan from the B.C. Corporation.
