Centre has given the go ahead for construction of cofferdam: CM

Asserting his government’s commitment to completing the Polavaram project, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Saturday said the Central government had given the green signal for the construction of the cofferdam that was necessary for releasing water through gravity.

Listing the achievements of the TDP government, he said interlinking of rivers was a milestone. After successfully linking the Godavari with the Krishna, the government had set its sight on linking the Krishna with the Penna, he added.

Mr. Naidu was addressing the villagers and people’s representatives at the gram sabha organised at Kodurupadu in Nellore rural limits as part of the Janmabhoomi Maa Vooru programme.

Referring to former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s observation on the need to develop the rural areas, Mr. Naidu said villages would witness transformation only when they had adequate water for irrigation and access to well-developed infrastructure and educational facilities.

Water management

“I have plans to link the Godavari, the Krishna and the Penna. This will help farmers in most of the villages. Equal care is being taken for developing local water sources such as farm ponds and linking the minor and major tanks for better water management,” he added.

Mr. Naidu said interlinking of rivers proved to be a successful model considering the benefits already being extended to the farmers despite deficit rainfall and unfavourable monsoon this year.

Referring to the murder of a caretaker of a mosque at Rajamahendravaram, Mr. Naidu said the accused was nabbed within hours of the incident, thanks to the monitoring done from the Real Time Governance Centre in Amaravati.

He warned of stringent action against those involved in atrocities against women. Those disturbing peace and harmony would not be spared, he added.

Emphasising the need for building ideal villages, Mr. Naidu promised to extend greater support to rural people and their leaders for developing good buildings for schools, anganwadi centres, Stree Sakthi bhavans which could be used for the uplift of the poor.
