Mystery behind death of woman, 3 others solved, 7 arrested

The West Godavari police on Monday solved a case in which a woman and three children were charred to death on October 25 in suspicious conditions, which was altered as a murder case on 28.

The incident took place at Veerisettivarigudem village in Kamavarapukota mandal. The police arrested seven persons in this case who allegedly hatched and executed the plan.

SP M. Raviprakash told the media on Monday that all the seven confessed to the crime. Four of them, including husband of the deceased woman, Ketha Nageswara Rao, a ‘sorcerer’, was directly involved in the case. They poured petrol into the hut in which the deceased were sleeping and set it afire.

Ketha Lakshmi, her daughters Annapurneswari and Lavanya, and her nephew Manikanta were burnt alive in the house. The sister-in-law of Lakshmi, Pitani Rangamma, sustained severe burns and is undergoing treatment in the local government hospital.

In her declaration, Rangamma said she had observed someone pouring petrol through windows and lighting a fire which engulfed the hut.

She alleged that Nageswara Rao, his son Nagaraju and one Kadali Satyanarayana were behind the incident.

Property dispute

The SP said that a property dispute led to the killings. The main accused Ketha Nageswara Rao (57) hired a professional killer, Sheik Shajahan (19), and his friend Goli Nandu Pranay (20), a B.Tech student of Katheru in Rajamahendravaram Rural mandal, for ₹2 lakh and paid ₹50,000 as advance. In this connection, Alajangi Nagamani (36), Kadali Satyanarayana (28) and Kaka Raju (27) helped the main accused. The police recovered the vehicles and tools used for the killings from the accused.
