Community Police Officers (CPOs) to patrol Rajamahendravaram

Community police officers (CPOs) are introduced in the city, on Monday, as a part of community policing system in Rajamahendravaram Urban district.


This system is being introduced with the slogan of ‘police for public, police from the public and citizen in uniform’, with the objective of public police partnership. It  has been introduced in Chittoor district for the first time in the state and the DGP is considering to implement the same across the state after studying it for two years. After Rajamahendravaram, the system will be introduced in Eluru and Kadapa.


Rajamahendravaram Urban SP B Raja Kumari has made efforts to register the names of 1,800 persons for the programme. The persons who are selected will be called as CPOs. There will be no salaries for CPOs and people who have commitment and discipline can render their services. Selected people, who have financial status can have uniforms with their money and the police department will distribute uniforms for the people ,who cannot afford. The CPOs can perform their duty as police officers in case of shortage of the staff. 


The CPOs will be appointed in all the police stations in the urban district and the move is aimed to tackle staff shortage.
Urban SP B Raja Kumari said that this system was being introduced to reach out to the public and to maintain transparency. Stating that the persons who passed class 10 can join as CPOs, she explained that they can work for one to two hours every day and 10 to 15 hours for one week. 


She maintained that the services of the CPOs would be utilized in controlling crime, maintaining law and order and giving family counselling .Later, an awareness rally has been organised from Deluxe Centre to Pushkar ghat in city to mark the launch of the initiative
