MLA Akula launches dredging works in River Godavari

Rajamahendravaram: City MLA Dr Akula Satyannarayana on Monday launched dredging works to remove sand from river Godavari at Kotilingala Peta in Rajamahendravaram.Speaking on the occasion, Dr Akula said that there are benefits due to the dredging in river Godavari and added that better irrigation and drinking water facilities could be provided to the people in the limits of Sir Arthur Cotton barrage. 

Though the capacity of the barrage is three tmc ft, he mentioned that only 1.5 tmc ft of water could be stored due to the accumulation of sand in the river. Due to the removal of sand from the river, he said that water capacity will be increased and the livelihood of fishermen will be enhanced. 

He also said that scarcity of sand will end and livelihood will be available for construction workers as people could get sand at free of cost.  He suggested for digging canals on either side of the dredging site keeping the hot summer in mind.He informed that two lakh cubic meters of sand is going to be removed through dredging.
