Action plan to supply Godavari water for Rabi

RAJAMAHENDRAVARAM : The Godavari Head Works (GHW) has evolved a plan of action to supply adequate quantity of irrigation water to the farm land in the delta region for Rabi. A total of  82 tmc water is required to irrigate 8.6 lakh acres in the Godavari delta in Rabi season.

Plans are afoot to draw 35 tmc water from Sileru. The remaining 47 tmc water is drawn from the Godavari and its affiliated irrigation sources. The capacity of Dowleswaram barrage pond is 3 tmc. All the 175 gates of Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage remain closed now to maintain the water level in the pond.

Speaking to TNIE here on Monday, GHW Executive Engineer N Krishna Rao allayed the fears of farmers of the delta region that they may not get adequate irrigation water in Rabi like last season. The GHW has taken measures to ensure supply of adequate irrigation water to the delta region, including tail-end areas.

Dredging operations in the river and strengthening of irrigation canals help increase the  storage of Godavari river water. The river is likely to get adequate inflows from its catchment areas this season though the water level is low in Godavari at present. The Water Resources Department will leave no stone unturned to provide irrigation facility to the entire ayacut in Rabi, the EE said.
